English - Miss x Lose

ENGLISH

MISS X LOSE

Sentences like “You lost the train”, “You lost Economy class yesterday” or “I miss my keys” can sound odd to native English speakers.

In Portuguese we have only one word to describe these situations but in English we have two.

Miss

-      Failure to attend or to get something.

-      When someone is away from you and you wish they were with you.

-      Hey, you missed class on Friday.

-      I missed the bus and now I have to walk.

-      I miss my husband.

-      I miss my friends.

Lose

-      When you can’t find something or something is gone.

-      When something is gone from your life.

-      I’ve lost my keys.

-      I lost my dog.

-      I lost 100 dollars.

-      I lost my father.

-      I’ve lost my boyfriend.
